AAUW Scholarships for Women

AAUW is awarding more than $115 million in scholarships and grants to more than 13,000 scholars and organizations in 50 states such as Washington DC, Puerto Rico and Gaum. It is one of the largest scholarship programs for women in the world.

AAUW sponsored international scholarships are awarded to those women who are currently studying or potentially will study in the United States of America. These awards are intended to support women who are not US nationals or permanent residents of the United States.

Several accredited US institutions are affiliated with this scholarship.

Applicants must have earned at least a bachelor’s degree (one that is acceptable in the United States) at the time of applying for this scholarship.

To be eligible, potential applicants must have applied to an accredited U.S. institution in a program that is supported by the scholarship. This scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and demonstrated commitment. It is intended to produce leadership skills in potential women.

Who can participate?:

Applicants must belong to an underdeveloped country, an emerging nation or a repressed minority.

Scholarship endowment:

The award amount at the master’s level is $20,000. Some professional degree scholarships can be renewed for a second year, provided the recipient achieves a certain result. At the doctoral level, the award amount is $25,000 and at the postdoctoral level, the award value is $50,000.

The scholarship amount can be used to pay for education/living expenses, care for dependent children, and/or travel for educational purposes such as seminars or conferences.

Some applicants have the opportunity to conduct research in any country other than their home country. Foreign campuses of U.S. institutions are also affiliated with this award and are counted as outside the United States. But the number of these scholarships is limited.

These scholarships are also open to those students who are in their later years of study. But they must have one full year of study or research remaining at the time of application.

Conditions that participants must meet:

  • Scholarships are awarded by AAUW (American Association of University Women). Applicants should not have received any AAUW scholarships in the past.
  • Applications are only open to women who are not associated in any way with AAUW in the form of its administration or staff.
  • Be citizens of any country other than the United States. The applicants, who are supposed to obtain permanent residency or dual citizenship status in the United States next year, are not eligible to apply.
  • Have at least a bachelor’s degree, must be fluent in English, and must demonstrate their intention to return to their home country upon completion of their study program.
  • Demonstrate your  language proficiency through standardized tests  and are supposed to present proof of your previous degree.

Instructions to apply:

Complete the online application form and the link to that form is at the end of this article and upload all the required documents.

Some of the documents that must be submitted are recommendations from teachers or employers, academic records, proof of degrees, proof of English language proficiency/proof of the fact that the applicant’s native language is English through a written statement and resume .

AAUW Scholarship Regulations for Women

Scholarships are only for students enrolled in full-time studies. The scholarship cannot be deferred to later years.

If the recipient is unable to begin or continue her education in the scholarship year, her award will be revoked.

Recipients must not be receiving any other award whose value is greater than the International Fellowship Award. Prizes with a lower value may be taken but require written approval from AAUW.

With written approval from AAUW, recipients may travel abroad for study purposes and may work 20 hours per week.
